Discover the secrets of the Victorian Arcades of Leadenhall Market designed and created by Sir Horace Jones in 1881, one of the three markets he built for the City of London. The credentials of Leadenhall as a market go back nearly 2000 years. It was built on the site of the Roman Basilica and Forum, then continued during the medieval period as a market selling meat, fish and herbs, continuing well into the C17, as a place where wool merchants baled and weighed wool, the source of the City of London's wealth.

Come and hear about the generous Mayors of the City, such as Richard Whittington and Simon Ayres who ensured the City was fed in times of famine. The arcades still provide fresh meat, cheese shops, wine merchants and delicatessens creating a destination hub for fine dining and shopping.

Lest we forget, Leadenhall Market is also famous through film, starring in Harry Potter's Philosopher's Stone, also appears in many others. So come and join your qualified City of London Guide who will walk you through this extraordinary site. It has much history and lots of stories to share with you, at the same time introduce you to the ancient and modern on its fringes too.

Walks are free but we recommend you book your place by visiting our Eventbrite page.

Nearly all the regular walks and tours offered on this website are just turn up and pay or free. For these walks no advanced booking is possible. There are only a few tours that need to be booked in advance (Illuminated River, Smithfield Market, Leadenhall Market walks and Guildhall and the Roman Bath House tours) because of restricted numbers.

Note: tours run every day of the year except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. In exceptional circumstances we may not have a guide available and we'll let the City Information Centre know.

If you want a walk or lecture for a group of people, then please use our Find a Guide section.
